Horror Short Review: How Was Your Weekend? (2025)

Written and directed by Cam Banfield, How Was Your Weekend? stars James Morosini as Steven, having to put on a happy face. It’s Monday morning, time to get back to work, back to the anxieties of office life, and the unspoken rules that hold it together.

So, why just a happy face and not just ‘happy’? Well, it might have something to do with the voice message he’s listening too. One that that can be summed up as a ‘being dumped’ message. Hardly the best way to start a day, and a guaranteed distraction for the rest of it.

The inane chatter and superfluous enquires about the quality of the weekend suddenly doesn’t seem as important. Especially as the expectations of just about everyone, least of all colleagues, is that when asked ‘how was your weekend?’, you simply reply ‘fine, how about yours?’

Well, no more, and that is what How Was Your Weekend? explores via a darkly comedic and surreal style of horror. Building tension, but putting a smile on the face, especially when Rachael Harris’ boss character is introduced. After all, if you don’t have a good weekend, you can’t have a good week.

It’s crazy and silly but created with so much style and delivering a ton of substance too. It’s entertaining from beginning to end, and a lot of the entertainment factor comes from James Morosini. His facial expressions alone will win many viewers over, especially as his situation is so relatable.

What really makes the short such a joy to watch though is the story, characters, and antics are given the same love and care as though it was a feature-length film. There might not be enough time to be too expressive, but writer/director Cam Banfield does a masterful job of teasing the best out of everyone and everything.
